Bonus Tip: Collaboration Over Competition

1. Invest in Training Early - Learning from those ahead of you will save years of trial and error

If you’re starting a detailing business - or already running one - the most valuable investment you can make isn’t more tools or products. It’s professional training. Hands-on instruction from experienced detailers gives you a solid foundation in safe wash methods, efficient workflows, and correct product selection. It removes guesswork early on and helps you avoid the costly trial-and-error phase that slows most new businesses and leads to inconsistent results.

Good training also speeds up real competence. You learn how to properly assess and approach different surfaces, apply the right techniques for each stage of the process, and consistently deliver high-quality finishes from much earlier in your journey. That level of consistency is what builds trust, especially with early clients - and it’s what sets you apart in a crowded market.

Starting with the right knowledge doesn’t just improve your detailing. It strengthens your entire business, making it more structured, more efficient, and easier to scale.

Key takeaway: Professional training pays for itself. It reduces mistakes, improves consistency, and shortens the time it takes to build a credible, reliable detailing business.

2. Marketing is Non-Negotiable - Post Regularly, Show Behind the Scenes, Share Results & Build a Personal Brand

New and existing detailing businesses - your skills alone are not enough. Clients don’t book based on ability alone; they book based on awareness, trust, and understanding of what you actually deliver.

That’s why marketing should be treated as a core part of any detailing business, not an afterthought. In today’s market, consistent content, active social media, and a clear personal brand are what separate you from more established detailers and businesses.

Get comfortable with marketing and commit to posting regularly across platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Focus on real work - not just finished results or highlight reels. Show the process. Behind-the-scenes footage, 50/50 shots, correction stages, transformation videos, and short educational clips all build far more trust than polished end results alone.

One of the biggest regrets we had early on at Valiant was focusing solely on delivering results for clients, without documenting the journey from the beginning. Don’t make that mistake. Start simple, stay consistent, and build your presence over time. People connect with process, personality, and progress - not just the final outcome.

Given time, consistency compounds. It builds recognition, increases visibility, drives word-of-mouth referrals, and positions you as a trusted operator in your area. Great detailing gets people talking - but consistent marketing is what gets them through the door in the first place.

Key takeaway: Your skills create the result. Your marketing creates the opportunity. You need both to grow.

3. Don't Compete on Price

This is key - don’t make the mistake of trying to fill your diary by being the cheapest. Nobody wins in a race to the bottom.

There will always be someone willing to charge less. When you compete on price alone, you undervalue your own work and will likely attract the wrong type of customer - those who see detailing as a quick, cheap service rather than a skilled, time-intensive craft.

Instead, focus on what actually sets you apart. Attention to detail, consistency, professionalism, and the way you present your business all matter. The customer experience is just as important as the result itself.

Clean presentation, clear communication, and consistently high standards give people reasons to choose you beyond price. Over time, you will find that the clients who value their vehicles properly are also the ones willing to pay for quality, and they’re the ones who return.

Some of our most rewarding projects have come from clients who value quality workmanship above all else.

Pricing isn’t just about covering costs. It reflects your skill, your standards, the problems you solve, and the level of service you deliver. Position yourself as a professional from day one, and let that define your reputation.

Key takeaway: Compete on quality, not price. The right clients don’t look for the cheapest option - they look for the best result.

4. Choose Your Customers Wisely - Saying "NO" to the Wrong Work Will Save Time, Money & Stress

In the early stages of any detailing business, it can be somewhat tempting to accept every booking that comes your way. However, we have found that not all customers are worth the time, effort, or stress they often bring. Many will have unrealistic expectations, undervalue your services, think it’s quick and easy work, or fail to understand the time, equipment and skill required to produce quality results.

Learning which clients are the right fit early on is crucial for building any detailing business. We often say that you get a gut feeling when talking to a client and saying “no” to the wrong clients or jobs allows you to focus on customers who respect your work, pay fair rates, and provide positive reviews. Over time, this approach saves money, reduces stress, and helps maintain the quality and professionalism of your service and business.

For start-ups, we would say it’s about establishing your standards and outlook. By being somewhat selective on the work you take on, you reinforce your reputation as a professional, reliable detailer who delivers top-quality results. It’s not just about turning away work, it’s about creating the right opportunities that actually cover costs, result in profits & fit your outlook to grow your business efficiently.

Key Takeaway: The best clients value your work, respect your time and help your business grow.

5. Technique Beats Tools.

Yes - machines, pads, and compounds matter. But don’t fall into the trap of chasing every new piece of equipment. Master your technique with what you already have.

When you’re starting out, it’s easy to believe success comes from having the latest machines or the most expensive products. In reality, results come from skill, consistency, and understanding how to use your tools properly.

That means developing control over your machine, understanding product behaviour, managing pressure and speed correctly, and building repeatable processes you can rely on. These fundamentals matter far more than constantly upgrading equipment.

A skilled detailer with basic tools will almost always outperform someone with high-end equipment but limited experience. This is particularly evident in paint correction work, where technique matters far more than the machine itself.

Key takeaway: Master the technique before upgrading the tools. Skill and good technique will always outperform equipment alone.

6. Preparation Makes or Breaks the Job

We can’t stress this enough- don’t rush. The finish and protection are only as good as the prep underneath it.

Cutting corners during the wash, decontamination, or preparation stages might save a bit of time upfront, but it almost always leads to compromised results, wasted materials, and more work later in the process.

For new detailers - or those looking to improve - building disciplined, repeatable prep routines is one of the most effective ways to elevate your results quickly. A properly cleaned and correctly prepared surface is what allows you to achieve consistent, professional finishes every time.

This is especially critical in areas like paint protection film installation. Even small preparation mistakes can lead to contamination, poor adhesion, wasted film, and ultimately an unhappy client. In this kind of work, prep is not just important - it directly determines the quality and longevity of the installation.

Key takeaway: Exceptional results always come from exceptional preparation. Never rush the foundations.

7. Focus on Your Journey - Not Someone Else's Highlight Reel

When starting out, it’s easy to look at established detailers on social media for inspiration or even draw comparisons. You see the finished results, the premium setups, the latest tools, and fully booked calendars. What you’re actually seeing is the result of years of work - not the beginning.

Often, what you see online is someone’s Chapter 10 - every successful detailing business started small. Mistakes were made, standards were built over time, and experience was earned through repetition and refinement. We’re no different here at Valiant Detailing.

It’s important to understand that comparing your early stages to someone else’s established business will only create unnecessary pressure. Instead, focus on your own development - improving your skillset, refining your process, and building consistency in your work.

Growth in this industry takes time. It requires patience, discipline, and a genuine willingness to learn - don’t be afraid to reach out to those who are already where you want to be. Many are more open to helping than you’d expect.

Key Takeaway: The goal isn’t to be the best immediately - it’s to improve consistently

8. Know Your Numbers - Track Every Expense & Plan Ahead

When setting up or in the early stages of a business, the financial side of things is often overlooked in favour of the hands-on work. However, understanding your numbers is what separates businesses that survive from those that scale. Many detailers don’t struggle due to a lack of skill, but because they don’t fully understand their costs, margins, and overall financial position.

From day one, track every expense - products, equipment, marketing, insurance, and overheads. Knowing exactly what it costs to run your business allows you to price correctly, protect your margins, and make better decisions as you grow.

Alongside this, build a consistent marketing approach that generates a steady flow of enquiries. Whether through social media, referrals, or networking, predictable lead flow creates stability and makes growth far easier to plan and manage.

Key Takeaway: Know your numbers. Understanding your costs, margins and lead generation is essential for long-term sustainable growth.

9. Your Brand is More Than a Logo

Your brand is far more than a logo. It’s your ethos, how you present yourself, and the impression you leave on every client. In our experience, trust is built through professionalism, consistency, and the overall experience you provide - not just the quality of the finished result.

Branding influences every interaction a customer has with your business. From how you answer calls and emails, to the way you explain your services and pricing, every detail contributes to perception. It also extends to your workwear, the presentation of your van or workspace, and the overall organisation and professionalism of your setup.

In this industry, customers often remember the experience just as much as the result. A consistent, professional approach builds confidence, encourages repeat business, and turns satisfied customers into long-term advocates.

Ultimately, your brand is the sum of every touchpoint someone has with your business. Build it intentionally from day one, and it will set you apart from competitors who focus only on the work itself.

Our own journey at Valiant Detailing has reinforced just how important consistency and professionalism are when building a trusted brand.

Key takeaway: Your brand is built through every customer interaction - not just your logo.

10. Create Systems Early

This is something we wish we had focused on much earlier in our journey. In the early stages, it’s easy to do everything yourself - replying to messages, managing bookings, ordering products, and working on vehicles - all without any real structure in place. As the business grows, however, a lack of systems quickly leads to stress, missed opportunities, and burnout.

Creating simple workflows early on makes a significant difference. A structured booking process, message templates, service checklists, and basic automations all help save time, improve consistency, and deliver a better customer experience.

Strong systems also make it easier to track performance, plan ahead, and eventually delegate as your business develops. The goal is to stay in control of the business, rather than constantly reacting to it.

Key takeaway: Work on your business, not just in it. Systems keep you organised, consistent, and in control as you grow.

Bonus Tip: Collaboration Over Competition

Healthy competition is part of every industry, but over time our perspective on this - particularly within the detailing and paint protection film sectors - has changed significantly.

As a small team, we only complete a limited number of vehicles each month, especially when focusing on one or two jobs per week. The reality is that there is, at times, more work available than any small business can realistically take on.

With experience, we’ve come to value collaboration over competition. Building relationships with like-minded detailers and PPF installers often opens up opportunities you may not have considered. Experienced professionals can offer advice, share knowledge, or refer work when they’re fully booked. Likewise, body shops, car dealerships, and other related automotive businesses can become valuable referral partners.

Beyond business, these relationships create a support network within the industry. Sharing knowledge, solving problems, and learning from others on a similar path makes the journey more sustainable and less isolating.

Key takeaway: Collaboration often creates more opportunities than competition ever will.
